Pedro Pichardo made history this Wednesday by becoming European champion in the triple jump after winning the Olympic title in Tokyo (Japan) in 2021 and the world title in Eugene (USA) just over three years ago. A remarkable feat that makes him one of the best trios of all time.
The 29-year-old won with great ease this Wednesday during the European Athletics Championships in Munich. On the first attempt, he jumped 17.05 meters and immediately dropped out of the competition for a long distance. On the second jump, he jumped 17.50 meters and further increased his advantage. He then scored a zero on his third attempt, but made it to the last three jumps before the start of the competition and very calmly. The second best score (Italian Andrea Dallavalle) – 17.04. That is still below the worst of Pichardo’s two actual jumps.
In the final series, where the best eight went, the Portuguese had the luxury of giving up the first two attempts. He rested to try and get a big result on the last jump. And it almost succeeded, but the last test turned out to be zero by several centimeters. Glory was secured. Thiago Pereira, another Portuguese competitor, finished 8th with a best of 16.60 meters.
Also this Wednesday, but earlier, Patricia Mamone managed to reach the final of the women’s triple jump with her best mark of the year (14.45 m). They took sixth place. The final will take place tomorrow.
