The European Championships in Munich have so far exceeded the expectations of the organizers. “We are overwhelmed! Simply terrific how these European championships are accepted,” said Olympiapark managing director Marion Schöne at the request of the German Press Agency.
“The Olympic Park is jam-packed every day, the mood at the competition locations all over the city is sensational. We already moved almost 900,000 people in the first week. The start of the athletics European Championship also ensured goosebumps,” added Schöne. In total, European Championships have been held in nine different sports in Munich since August 11th.
Olympic Park spokesman Tobias Kohler hopes that it will not take two decades before a major athletics event takes place in the Olympic Stadium. There was also an EM in 2002.
“The multisport format has shown that it fits perfectly with the Olympic Park. Of course we also take a closer look at the athletics formats and would like to do more here,” said Kohler. But the Olympic Stadium is great and there are not so many events that so many spectators are moving. “But after 2002 and 2022 it does not have to take 20 years again to an athletics festival of this size,” said Kohler.
