The four-time world champion won the new Olympic combined competition on Thursday on the Königsplatz in Munich with 175.6 points ahead of the Czech lead European champion Adam Ondra (170.8) and the Spaniard Alberto Gines Lopez (151.7). Bouldering gold medalist Nicolai Uznik ended up in last place in the final field of eight (62.5). “It was new for all of us today, for me it turned out great,” said Schubert.
After the bouldering round, everything was set for a hot finale. Ondra (80.7 points), the Frenchman Sam Avezou (80.6) and his compatriot Mejdi Schalck (80.5) and Schubert (80.5) had each cracked three boulders. The minimum difference results from the fact that one tenth is deducted for each invalid attempt. Incidentally, Schubert was the only one who had solved the second boulder. Uznik only topped twice, was sixth at halftime (61.4).
Schalck was the first to go the lead route, but at 30+ it was already the end of the line. The subsequent Avezou fell on the rope at 38+, which ended the duel for gold between Ondra and Schubert. Because of course it was to be assumed that both would at least come close.
Schubert climbed confidently, grabbed the top with one hand, but slipped and was 4.9 points short of the 100. However, silver was already certain because only Ondra was able to overtake him. The other lead medalists Luka Potocar (SLO) and Gines Lopez were already too far behind after bouldering. Ondra started confidently, saved himself from falling once, continued on his way, but didn’t get as far as Schubert.
For Austria, the climbing competitions in Munich were extremely successful with four medals, because Jessica Pilz had won silver in the lead and bronze in the combination in the women’s competitions.
