It’s one of THE topics in football: Although women and men play and train the same amount – the differences in salaries and bonuses are still huge. A national player now says: She would not find the same salary appropriate.
A few weeks ago, Laura Freigang was still with the German national team in the European Championship final. The fact that they didn’t even get the title was a close decision in the end – including a controversial goal.
Even if she had won the final: The bonus for the title would have been significantly lower for Freigang and her colleagues than in the men’s competitions: If the women had won the European Championship, there would have been 60,000 euros – the pros of the men’s national team would have last year, on the other hand, collected a proud 400,000 euros for a European Championship victory.

But there is no reason for complaints, as she revealed in a double interview with Timothy Chandler and “Sport Bild”. There she answered the question of whether she felt underpaid: “If we don’t bring in millions, you can’t pay out such amounts” and added: “I wouldn’t find it appropriate to earn the same as my male football colleagues .”
The big difference in salaries in football is a constant source of debate and has already caused changes in other countries: the USA, Spain, England and the Netherlands, among others, now pay men and women the same bonuses. Many countries asked themselves the same questions as Laura Freigang.
In Norway, the association found a solution back in 2017: the women there receive the same bonuses because the men gave up money from their sponsorship income. Frankfurt player Timothy Chandler also has a similar solution in mind in the same interview: “It wouldn’t be a problem for me to say: We’ll split the bonuses half-half with the women.”
