The third match day of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season starts on Friday with the game between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hertha BSC.

The other games of the third matchday at a glance:

Borussia Dortmund – Werder Bremen (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

Situation: After two victories, BVB want to improve their game and keep in touch with leaders FC Bayern. Promoted Bremen has so far proven its suitability for the Bundesliga with two draws.

Personnel: At BVB, the convalescent Süle, Özcan and Adeyemi are again an option. The Bremen team has the recently injured Pieper and Ducksch available again.

Stats: BVB haven’t lost any of their last seven Bundesliga games against Bremen. Recently there were three wins in a row.

Special: The Werder squad includes three former BVB pros: Ducksch, who was born in Dortmund, Bittencourt and Pieper.

Bayer Leverkusen – TSG Hoffenheim (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

Situation: Last year’s third place Leverkusen is last after two games and has lost the first three competitive games for the first time. Hoffenheim lost at the start in Gladbach, but then defeated Bochum.

Personnel: Bayer are missing Wirtz, Adli, Bellarabi and Lunew. Captain Hradecky’s ban has expired, Andrich is back after an injury. Posch returns to Hoffenheim after a suspension.

Statistics: There are no big series between the two clubs. However, it is worth noting that ten goals were scored in the two games last year (2-2 and 4-2 for Bayer). And TSG coach Breitenreiter has never won against Leverkusen in seven games.

Special: It is the duel of the Swiss master coaches of the past four years. Seoane always won the title with Young Boys Bern from 2019 to 2021 before going to Leverkusen and Breitenreiter triumphed with FC Zurich.

VfL Wolfsburg – FC Schalke 04 (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

Situation: After a draw and a defeat, Wolfsburg welcome the guests from Gelsenkirchen, who have the same record.

Personnel: Newcomer Wimmer falls out with Wolfsburg after a collision in training. In addition, there are the longer injured Wind and Gerhardt. Schalke has to do without Drexler (red card).

Statistics: As a coach, Niko Kovac has only lost one of his eight duels against the club from Gelsenkirchen. Schalke have been without an away win for 29 Bundesliga games – most recently they managed a threesome in Bremen before relegation in November 2019.

Special: As a coach, Kovac meets colleague Kramer for the first time in a competitive game.

FC Augsburg – 1. FSV Mainz 05 (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

Situation: The FCA have self-confidence after their victory in Leverkusen, the FSV is still undefeated this season.

Personnel: Attacking player Vargas (muscle tendon injury) should return to the Augsburg squad, Mainz can use striker Burkardt (thigh strain).

Statistics: Augsburg have won their last five home games in the Bundesliga against Mainz.

Special: Augsburg only signed midfielder Baumgartlinger on Tuesday. The Austrian played in Mainz for five years and is at least a candidate for a squad at FCA.

VfB Stuttgart – SC Freiburg (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

Situation: Stuttgart is waiting for its first win of the season after two draws, Freiburg wants to make amends for the 3-1 draw against Dortmund.

Personnel: VfB is playing with the best players, and Sosa could also be in the starting XI again. The guests are still missing Höler from the permanent staff.

Statistics: Sport-Club has been unbeaten against VfB for six league games and has won the last four duels.

Special: Two Austrian national strikers meet in Kalajdzic and Gregoritsch. Gregoritsch, who has already scored two league goals, is new to Freiburg. Kalajdzic, who set up all three VfB goals, may still leave Stuttgart.

1. FC Union Berlin – RB Leipzig (Saturday, 6.30 p.m.)

Situation: Union Berlin has four points for the first time after two matchdays, while RB only have two. Coach Tedesco doesn’t want to know anything about the bad mood in Leipzig.

Personnel: Union trainer Fischer has his squad completely together with the exception of convalescent Baumgartl. Klostermann are absent from Leipzig, Poulsen and Gulacsi are injured, and Szoboszlai is suspended.

Statistics: Union recently won 2-1 in the league against RB, before that there were three wins in a row for the Saxons. The 4:0 exactly three years ago is the only Leipzig victory in the stadium at the Alte Försterei.

Special: It will be quiet at the Alte Försterei – at least in the first 15 minutes of the game. In protest against RB as part of the Mateschitz empire, the otherwise loud Union fans are traditionally silent at first.

Eintracht Frankfurt – 1. FC Cologne (Sunday, 3.30 p.m.)

Situation: Frankfurt is still without a win in the league, Cologne wants to make amends after the home defeat in the European Cup.

Personnel: Frankfurt will have to do without defender Touré for a longer period of time. There are a few options offensively. At Köln Uth is still missing due to adductor problems, Martel is questionable.

Stats: Cologne have only won one of their last seven league games in Frankfurt.

Special: Frankfurt’s captain Rode – formerly with Bayern and BVB – is about to play his 200th Bundesliga game.

VfL Bochum – FC Bayern Munich (Sunday, 5.30 p.m.)

Situation: Six points, 8-1 goals – FC Bayern impressively confirmed their status as favorites right from the start of the season. On the other hand, after two defeats at the start, VfL are going into the game as blatant outsiders.

Personnel: National player Musiala should be missing from Bayern. Central defender de Ligt has a torn ligament in his hand but should play. Gnabry has a bony tear on his wrist. Bochum are missing Soares, Horn, Stafylidis, Osterhage, Antwi-Adjei and Grave. The last injured Holtmann is operational again.

Statistics: FC Bayern won 46 of 70 Bundesliga games between the two teams. The district club only prevailed nine times.

Special: Last season, VfL suffered their heaviest Bundesliga defeat at a 7-0 loss in Munich. In the second leg, however, there was a spectacular 4:2 with four goals in the first half within 30 minutes.
