Leonie Beck is European champion in open water swimming over ten kilometers. The 25-year-old won in the sea off Lido di Ostia near Rome with a strong final sprint ahead of Italy’s Ginevra Taddeucci. Bronze went to Angélica André from Portugal.
For the race, which was characterized by wind and waves, Beck needed 2:01:13.4 hours over the Olympic distance. Their advantage over second place was 1.8 seconds. “That used to be good,” Beck said and laughed. “European Champion is something very special. That was also my first individual gold medal.”
The former pool swimmer currently lives in Italy and knows the competition location from training. Also because of this and because of the enthusiastic atmosphere on the beach, the victory was special for her. “It’s really cool when you approach people,” said Beck. “Italy is very enthusiastic about sports. I’m pleased to see that there is some interest in the sport. I would like that for Germany too.”
Lea Boy, who won silver over 25 kilometers at the World Championships, took 13th place. Jeannette Spiwoks had to give up the race due to difficult conditions.
Among the men, Oliver Klemet took fifth place as the best German. The Italian Domenico Acerenza won ahead of the French Marc-Antoine Olivier and his compatriot Logan Fontaine.
