The German javelin thrower Julian Weber is the new European champion and thus the successor to Thomas Röhler, who won the title in Berlin four years ago.
At the European Athletics Championships in Munich, the 27-year-old from Mainz won with 87.66 meters and won his first international medal. Weber missed out on a podium place at the Olympic Games last year and most recently at the World Championships when he finished fourth. Now he secured the sixth European title for the German team in Munich.
Silver went to Olympic silver medalist and World Championship bronze medalist Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic, who jumped 87.28 meters. The Finn Lassi Etelätalo won bronze with 86.44 meters. After his best attempt in the second round, Vadlejch was initially in front of Weber, who made the winning shot on the fourth attempt and made it the greatest success of his career. The second German finalist Andreas Hofmann from Mannheim, four years ago second at the European Championships, took eleventh place with 74.75 meters.
Defending champion Röhler from Jena had already been eliminated in the qualification, the 2016 Olympic champion is not yet back in the form he used to be after a long-term back injury. Former world champion Johannes Vetter had given up the European Championship.
