The change in the format should begin to take effect after the 2022 Qatar World Cup, going from 32 to 48 the teams that dispute the maximum fair.
FIFA plans to implement the new classification model in South America for the World Cup that will be jointly organized in 2026 by Canada, the United States and Mexico.
Currently, the 10 South American teams face each other round trip, the first 4 qualify and the fifth goes to the playoff with a team from another continent.
Change of format of the Playoffs
The new format would create two groups of five teams, each of which would play home-and-away matches against the five from the other group. In total, each team would play 10 games.
The first two of each group would qualify directly for the World Cup. Third and fourth would face each other, with a direct ticket for the winners. The losers would play for the playoff spot.
In the South American qualifier for the World Cup in Qatar, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Uruguay qualified directly, while Peru went to the playoffs, where they lost on penalties against Australia.
