FIFA plans VAR improvements for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

With less than 100 days to go before Qatar and Ecuador kick off, there are many doubts about VAR and the biggest criticism stems from the time lost until the final decision was made. For that, FIFA plans to add a tool that is added to the implemented system with which the advanced positions will be determined semi-automatically.

This tool is known as the Semi-automated Offside Technology System (SAOT). It is neither more nor less than a computerized mechanism that will define in a much shorter time if the player was in a prohibited position or not.

How will VAR SAOT work at Qatar 2022?

The system “Uses specialized cameras to track 29 body points per player, allowing VAR teams to quickly and accurately determine offside situations”.

About 50 shots are sent per second of each of the players on the field, which allows a more precise analysis of the position of the protagonists involved in dubious plays and thus resolve the final decision in no more than 25 seconds.

Likewise, the limb detection technology offers the possibility of creating three-dimensional representations of the skeleton of each footballer in real time during the course of the match.

A total of 188 tests have been carried out since 2020, including every UEFA Champions League match from last season, the UEFA Women’s Champions League knockout stage and the full UEFA Women’s Euro finals, as well as the finals of other club competitions in order to have the system ready for Qatar 2022.

This year they already had their first test in the European Super Cup that they played real Madrid Y EintrachtFrankfurt.

In addition, it will continue to be tested during the group stage of the Champions League 2022-2023 that starts on September 7.
