“I’ll see that I can get to New York quickly, get a few more training sessions there and improve again before it starts there.” After losing the round of 16 at the ATP tennis tournament in Winston-Salem, Dominic Thiem quickly knew where he was headed. The 28-year-old had to bow 1: 6, 4: 6 to Jack Draper at the last preparatory tournament before the Grand Slam highlight on hard court. For world number one Novak Djokovic, on the other hand, the US Open is no longer a travel option.
Just before the draw for the final Grand Slam tournament of the season yesterday, Djokovic’s name was removed from the seeding list. The event in Flushing Meadows will therefore take place from Monday without the three-time winner, who has refused a corona vaccination and is therefore not allowed to enter the USA. Djokovic wrote on Twitter: “I will stay in shape and wait for the opportunity to play for titles again. See you soon tennis world.”
Thiem, who had a wildcard at the US Open, was drawn to Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta as his first-round opponent in Flushing Meadows. The 31-year-old Iberian is number twelve in the tournament.
