The Corona crisis has hit football hard financially. While sales are picking up again, they have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.
European professional football generated around 27.6 billion euros in the 2020/21 season. Sales have recovered noticeably compared to the previous season, but they are still well below the 28.9 billion euros that were achieved before the pandemic. As the chart based on Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance shows, the top five football leagues from England, Germany, Spain, Italy and France are responsible for sales in Europe.
In recent years, Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 revenues have accounted for more than half of the pan-European football market. The lion’s share is accounted for by the English Premier League – the top league in England registered sales of around 5.5 billion euros in the 2020/21 season.

TV rights are the biggest source of income
More than half of each league’s revenue is generated through television broadcasting. Matchday income, such as from ticket sales, only accounts for a maximum of two percent (La Liga).
For the coming seasons, the experts from Deloitte expect increasing sales for the clubs of the “Big Five”. The stadiums are already well filled again in the current season and corona restrictions are a thing of the past. The 2022/23 season is expected to generate record sales of 18.6 billion euros from the five big leagues alone.
