Volleyball World Cup: Argentina and a marathon defeat against Iran in the debut

In the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, the team led by Marcelo Méndez -bronze medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games- played a very even match against the Iranians, who finally prevailed with partials of 22-25, 30-28, 25-18 , 32-34 and 21-19 in three hours of play.

Argentina made too many errors (53 in total and 36 on serve) and paid dearly for them in the definition since they made mistakes on three consecutive serves when they had match point, although they left good feelings.

The albiceleste team used a renewed formation that had among its starters the receiving point Luciano Vicentín (the youngest on the squad at 22 years old and one of the World Cup debutants) for the injured Ezequiel Palacios.

The figure of the match was the Iranian Ebadipour Ghara Milad with 21 points. In Argentina, Facundo Conte finished as the top scorer with 20 goals and Agustín Loser, Bruno Lima (19 each) and Vicentín (15) also added.

The setter and captain Luciano De Cecco became the first volleyball player to play five World Cups in this century (he matched the mark of another Argentine, Javier Weber), and was one of the starters along with Lima, Conte, Loser, Vicentín, Joaquín Gallego and libero Santiago Danani. Martín Ramos, Matías Sánchez, Pablo Kukartsev, Luciano Palonsky and Jan Martínez also entered.

The National Team will play again on Monday from 9 a.m. against the Netherlands in Group F, broadcast by ESPN3 and Star+.

In the other match of the Argentine group, the Netherlands comfortably beat Egypt 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-16) with 21 points from the Dutch Nimir, top scorer.

24 countries participate in the 2022 World Cup, divided into six groups of 4. The first two from each zone and the four best third parties will qualify for the round of 16.

In its 12 World Cup participations, Argentina only managed to get on a podium in the 1982 World Cup, which was played in our country, and ranked 15th in the last World Cup in Italy/Bulgaria in 2018, when the team was led by Julio Velasco.
