The Mexican relegated the world champion in Spa-Francorchamps to second place with a lead of 0.137 seconds. Third was Carlos Sainz in Ferrari ahead of McLaren driver Lando Norris. Verstappen, Norris and five other drivers have to queue at the start of the race on Sunday because engine components on their cars were illegally exchanged.
The world championship runner-up Charles Leclerc from Ferrari, Haas driver Mick Schumacher, Esteban Ocon from Alpine and the Alfa Romeo duo Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou also receive starting place penalties. Schumacher struggled with technical problems on his car during the final practice laps and finished last. Sebastian Vettel finished eighth in the Aston Martin. In the overall World Cup standings, defending champion Verstappen is already 80 points ahead of Leclerc.
