Portugal won three more medals this Sunday at the European Judo Cup for Seniors in Coimbra, closing out a competition that saw 135 athletes from 22 countries compete for a balance of 11 podium finishes.

On the second and final day of the competition, Jorge Fonseca, two-time world champion in the 100 kg weight category, won the gold medal by defeating China’s Yongjie Ying in the final with the ippon method.

Earlier, the Portuguese judoka, the bronze medalist of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, beat the Chinese Zhuxiang Turini for the accumulation of “shido” and the Italian Lorenzo Turini for “ippon”.

In the same category, Guilherme Silva lost the first bout by ippon to China’s Fuchun Huang, but ended up winning the bronze after being repescado in the medal fight against Belgian Tom Nikiforov, who was not present.

In the 81 kg category, Joao Fernando won the bronze medal by defeating Manuel Rodriguez in the last fight, scoring a wazari before the final ippon.

Portugal, represented by 26 judokas, finishes the competition with 11 medals (two gold, with the triumph of Francisco Mendez, in the 60 kg weight category, three silver and six bronze on Saturday).
