Nearly a century old, Tia Matilde opened its doors in 1926 – a modest diner at the time – and the name of the current restaurant is a tribute to Emilio Andrade’s mother. The restaurant has been transformed and is now a gastronomic landmark in Lisbon, where lamprey and rice with duck are especially appreciated. Eusebio was a daily presence in the restaurant for many years and was a friend of Emilio Andrade.
In 2012, the former star fell ill at the hotel where the national team was staying in Poland. Eusebio was one of UEFA’s VIP guests and was flown to Lisbon by ambulance. Eusebio, who was transferred to the emergency room at Da Luz Hospital, said he was hungry and ordered chicken soup from his favorite restaurant, Tia Matilde. Doctors did not see the problem, and after a while chicken broth was delivered to the hospital. He then spent the afternoon resting.
