50 years of HC Linz AG – when you take a look at the archive of the handball jubilee, seven championship titles, four cup triumphs and reaching the European Cup final in 1993/94 outshine everything that has gone before. These are highlights that make you want more. The Upper Austrians haven’t won a trophy for a quarter of a century, but have picked up speed again after a long dry spell.
In the past season, Milan Vunjak’s team got a ticket to the semi-finals in the league and a place in the European Cup, which is kind of inspiring. On Friday, a perfect start was made, HC Linz AG didn’t give Schwaz a chance at 32:21 (17:7) in the SportMS Kleinmünchen. Which was also due to the returnee Alex Hermann, who immortalized himself with six goals in the list of marksmen.
The hosts overran the Tyroleans in the first half, that was a statement to the competition. It still wasn’t quite enough for the (little meaningful) championship lead after round one. That was due to the SG Westwien, which dispatched Vöslau 34:19. Doesn’t matter. “It was okay what we showed. We can’t complain, the atmosphere in the hall was great, our game was really good,” said Alex Hermann, whose twin brother Max is still injured. Postscript: “But there are still things that we need to improve.” That sounds like a dangerous threat to the competitors.
Now an English week is waiting for the people of Linz. On Wednesday (7 p.m.) the guest appearance at HSG Bärnbach/Köflach increases, on Saturday there will be an international breeze in Kleinmünchen. RK Izvidac from Bosnia-Herzegovina will be a guest in the European Cup. (Alex)
