Diogo Ribeiro wins third world junior title, now at 50 maripos and with a record

Diogo Ribeiro won the world junior title in the 50m mariposa in Lima on Saturday, setting a world record at that level, adding that achievement to the gold medals of 50 freestyle and 100 mariposa.

The 17-year-old Benfica swimmer won the competition in 22.96 seconds, improving by nine hundredths the world junior record held by Russian Andrey Minakov (23.05) since October 2020, and also bringing the national record of 11 hundredths, which has already belonged to him.

Diogo Ribeiro confidently won the final, leaving Czech Daniel Gracik in second place, half a second back (23.46) and Denmark’s Kasper Puggar in third place, one second back (23.96) after losing the 100m freestyle semi-final, which he qualified with the fastest time ahead of the absolute world record holder, Romanian David Popovic.

Having won his third world title, Diogo Ribeiro, visibly moved, thanked those who supported him, namely in the Peruvian pool.

“It’s been a very difficult, very stressful year,” the Portuguese swimmer said, promising to “get used to that rhythm of winning.”

The 17-year-old Benfica swimmer, coached by Alberto Silva, has already won the world junior title in the 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly in the Peruvian capital.

Holder of national records for 100 meters freestyle (48.52 seconds) and 100 meters (51.61) and 50 meters (22.96) butterfly, at a distance of which he won a bronze medal at the last absolute European championship, in Rome.
