Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen takes pole position at home

Dutch driver Max Verstappen (Red Bull) beat two Ferraris today to take pole position at the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

The reigning world champion set the fastest lap of 1.10.342 minutes, ahead of Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) by just 0.021 seconds and Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), who was third, by 0.092 seconds.

It was the 17th pole of Max Verstappen’s career, fourth this season.

Leclerc looked like he would have the best time in the decisive third qualifying round, but Verstappen, who was close behind, managed to improve his time and dethrone the Monegasque rider from first place.

“It’s incredible. Today was very tense, but I like to race here. We have changed a lot since Friday and it was fun to ride,” commented the Dutch rider.

Leclerc did start a last try before the checkered flag, but a top made by Mexican Sergio Pérez caused his Red Bull to stall in the middle of the last corner, forcing yellow flags to be tried on the final section of the track, making it impossible for more riders to improve their times.

Pérez only finished fifth behind Britain’s Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) who was fourth.

Briton Lando Norris (McLaren), who qualified in the third quarter, did not leave the pits due to mechanical problems.

The Dutch Grand Prix is the 15th race of the season out of 22 scheduled.

Max Verstappen comes out 93 points ahead of teammate Sergio Pérez in second place in this round.
