Thomas Müller’s different tournament results: World Cup top, EM flop

81st minute against England, Germany are 0: 1 behind, Thomas Müller runs alone towards the opposing goal – and misses the chance to equalize. In all European Championship participations, the Bayern striker remained without a goal. It looks different at the World Championships.

Thomas Müller – sometimes a match winner, sometimes unlucky. At this year’s European Championships, the latter is more likely to be the case. The 31-year-old striker in the service of FC Bayern Munich missed a big chance in the round of 16 against England in the 81st minute when he ran up to goalkeeper Jordan Pickford alone and finally pushed the ball just past the goal from a good 16 meters. It could have been the 1: 1 equalization, if not at all.

But Thomas Müller was denied his first goal at the EM 2021 – yes, even his first goal at a European Championship! Because of his 39 goals in 106 games in the DFB jersey, the offensive man has not scored a single one at a European Championship finals. And that with three tournaments since 2012 and a total of 15 appearances.

Thomas Müller so far without a European Championship hit

Thomas Müller, on the other hand, has presented a different face at the world championships so far. There he scored ten goals in a total of 16 games – an impressive rate. Among other things, the three-goal Thomas Müller show in the 4-0 preliminary round victory against Portugal at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which was crowned with the title at the end, is unforgettable. At the bankruptcy World Cup in Russia in 2018, Thomas Müller didn’t succeed either: In the three preliminary rounds he remained without a goal.

But the bottom line is: There are two Thomas Müller in the national team: the hapless EM Müller and the successful WM Müller. The 31-year-old doesn’t have an explanation for this either, but it still annoys him that he couldn’t polish up his record in the last European Championship game. He wrote after his missed chance in the last German European Championship game for the time being: “There it was, that one moment that you will remember in the end, that brings you to sleep at night. For which you work, train and live as a footballer. That moment when you have it in your own hands to bring your team back into a close knockout game and to throw an entire football nation into ecstasy. To get this opportunity and then to let it go unused, it really hurts me. ”

It is currently unclear whether at least the World Cup miller will have another appearance. After he was temporarily removed from the national team and returned to the 2021 European Championship, it is unclear how things will go on with him and the DFB team. But the chances of a continuation of the national team career are not bad. The new national coach and ex-Bayern coach Hansi Flick is considered a staunch Thomas Müller fan.
