Three draws in a row: Bayern apparently have a problem motivating themselves for the Bundesliga. They showed that they can do things differently against Inter Milan during the week. That can be a problem for coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn were in a good mood on the stands of the Stuttgart Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart. In stoppage time, Serhou Guirassy safely converted the penalty against Manuel Neuer. The goal meant VfB equalized against FC Bayern and it stayed that way until the final whistle. It was Bayern’s third consecutive draw in the Bundesliga. That’s not a broken leg. With twelve points, they are back at the top of the table for the time being. However, Freiburg can take the lead again with a draw or a win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday.
Still, the third draw in a row is a bit of a nuisance. When 17-year-old Matys Tel (36th), the French super talent, scored the opening goal, Salihamdzic was still in the stands (Oliver Kahn, of course, remained untouched). FC Bayern’s sporting director was not only happy about the opening goal, but also about the fact that Tel is now the youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history. His predecessor was Jamal Musiala. Until then, Bayern had shown a fairly leisurely and uninspired game.
Thomas Müller is “sour”
The interim equalizer (57th) by courageous players from Stuttgart was followed by Musiala taking the lead again (60th). So everything went as planned until Matthijs de Ligt fouled Guirassy and there was a penalty in the 92nd minute, which the fouled man literally smashed into the top right corner himself. The Bayern bosses were in a bad mood now. Salihamidzic said he was “sour” and Kahn looked a little grimmer than usual.
The Bayern pros were aware that the result wasn’t ideal for Tuesday’s game against FC Barcelona in the Champions League. “Today I’m mad for the first time this whole season – mad at ourselves,” said Thomas Müller, for example, who seemed pissed off. After a quick shower, Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich left the reporters in the mixed zone annoyed and wordless.
“We have been warned,” said Salihamidzic. But it’s still very early in the season. “Nothing has happened yet,” he added. That’s how coach Julian Nagelsmann saw it, who quarreled: “We have to score the third goal, then the game is over.”
No serious problem for FC Bayern
Bayern don’t have a serious problem. But maybe one thing is emerging. During the week, the team delivered a top performance against Inter Milan in the Champions League. In San Siro there was an alert, precise and quick combining team on the pitch, which defeated the Italian runners-up 2-0. Bayern also seemed motivated in the first Bundesliga games (6-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt, 7-0 against Bochum), after all they had to prove that the departure of top scorer Robert Lewandowski would not cause any problems.
In the meantime, Lewandowski should no longer be an issue. On the other hand, Bayern seem to have problems motivating themselves in the league as well as in the Champions League. This is a well-known phenomenon, not only among the people of Munich. In addition, Nagelsmann made six changes in the game against Stuttgart, which can disrupt the rhythm. In this case, it led to the third consecutive draw in the Bundesliga. Whether this is actually good news for the national competition cannot be said.
