The mistress of tennis: Swiatek confirmed her hegemony with the US Open title

Swiatek, the world number one, beat Jabeur, who will be number two on Monday, 6-2 7-6 (5) at Arthur Ashe, the world’s largest tennis court.

The Polish, 21 years old and double champion of Roland Garros (2020 and 2022), remains intractable in the finals, with a full of wins in the last 10 he has played.

The Warsaw gem has not even dropped a set in any final since the only one she lost of her career in Lugano in 2019.

For her part, Jabeur, runner-up in July at Wimbledon, missed her second chance to be the first African to lift a Grand Slam title.

The 28-year-old Tunisian overcame a blistering start from Swiatek, who took the first set in half an hour, and battled back in the second to force a tiebreak, in which she led 5-4.

After her loss to Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon, the Tunisian starred in a spectacular run in New York in which she only dropped one set in six matches and swept the French Caroline Garcia, the player of the moment.

The first African to compete for the US Open trophy, Jabeur crashed out in the final with a Swiatek who had advanced through the tournament keeping a low profile and containing her expectations.

In the decisive match, the leader of the WTA ranking presented her most devastating version, with which she captured six trophies earlier in the season, including Roland Garros, and added a second Grand Slam to her showcase.

In a women’s circuit without a clear dominator since the decline of Serena Williams, Swiatek is the first to win two of the four Grand Slams in the same season since 2016.

At Williams’ farewell tournament, Swiatek was also the first player to win seven titles in one year since the American star did so in 2014.

The men’s final will be played on Sunday by the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz and the Norwegian Casper Ruud. The winner will lift his first Grand Slam title and will also become the new number one in the ATP.
