Sports marketing expert Dirk Klingenberg believes that when it comes to sustainability in sports, specifications such as those issued by the German Football League when licensing are essential.
The DFL has taken the first step by only granting licenses if sustainability goals are met, said the former water polo international in an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. “The following applies to sport as a whole, from very big to very small: If I only get sponsors, partners, events, competitions when I meet sustainability requirements, I have to deal with them. Then it becomes relevant,” said the 53- years management consultant and short-term competitive sports director in the German Swimming Association.
According to sustainability expert Christina Gossel, associations and clubs need help in implementing sustainability goals. The following applies to sport and sports clubs in particular: if something is to be mandatory, support and funding must also be offered, she told the “FAZ”. “There are various funding programs at federal and EU level that provide financial support for sustainable commitment, including for sports clubs, associations and sports facilities,” explained Gossel.
