RB Leipzig coach Jesse Marsch called football in Europe “not fair” because of the large financial differences between the clubs. There is a more balanced monetary structure in the USA because the budgets are limited by the leagues, said the American in an interview with the “kicker”. In the MLB professional baseball league, for example, there are no differences between the big clubs like the New York Yankees and the smaller ones like Oakland Athletics as there are in European football. “So, as I understand it, and with the sporting spirit of an American, European football is not fair,” said Marsch.
The 47-year-old is in favor of a budget limit, but does not consider it feasible. “Why not? But it doesn’t fit the structure of European football,” he said when asked. But he also doesn’t know what a panacea look like to ensure fairer competition.
Marsch emphasized that RB Leipzig strictly adhere to the requirements of Financial Fair Play (FFP). The FFP is a criterion of the European Football Union for the approval of clubs for the European Cup competitions. Thereafter, expenditure may not exceed income over a period of three years. A deficit of a maximum of 30 million euros can be offset by external donors.
Marsch wonders how some clubs could still be part of financial fair play in their spending. “My performance in mathematics at school and at the university was okay. But with my knowledge, the FFP bill for some clubs really doesn’t work,” said the coach.
However, RB Leipzig does not necessarily have the best repute among many football fans, as the club is considered a retort club that, in case of doubt, is funded with millions of the effervescent billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz (Red Bull).
