Federer is set to play doubles alongside his longtime rival Rafael Nadal against US duo Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe tonight (9.30pm / Eurosport) at the Laver Cup in London. Last week, the Swiss announced that he would end his career after three knee operations after the team competition.
For his last game, Federer had wanted the Spaniard Nadal as a doubles partner. Of course, Björn Borg, team boss of the European selection, fulfilled the last wish of the 20-time Grand Slam tournament champion. “After all the great things we shared together on and off the pitch, being part of this historic moment is something I will never forget,” said Nadal. “I hope we can reach a decent level together and maybe win the game.”
Federer admitted he was definitely nervous. “I’m not sure if I can deal with it,” said the Swiss about the emotions that would certainly arise. “I’ve often been nervous before big matches, but that makes you feel completely different,” said the longtime number one in the world, who was already celebrated by around 10,000 spectators in London during training on Thursday. The Laver Cup pits a European team against a selection of players from the rest of the world from Friday to Sunday.
