Liane Lippert narrowly missed out on a medal in the road race at the World Cycling Championships in Wollongong, Australia. The 24-year-old from Friedrichshafen took fourth place after 164.3 kilometers.
The exceptional Dutch driver Annemiek van Vleuten clinched victory despite a broken elbow. Lotte Kopecky from Belgium and Silvia Persico from Italy took second and third place.
The race was particularly bitter for Lippert. The German had attacked on each of the last two laps and had already distanced the favorites in a five-man lead group. But shortly before the goal came the merger. Van Vleuten then surprised with an attack and took the win by a second. The 39-year-old fell heavily shortly after the start of the mixed team time trial on Wednesday and broke her elbow. Nevertheless, it was enough for the second world title after 2019.
