Leon Goretzka has extended his contract with FC Bayern Munich. This means that the midfield center is in place for the years to come.
Record champions Bayern Munich have extended the contract with national player Leon Goretzka for the long term and thus tied the next building block for the future. As the club officially announced on Thursday, Goretzka signed a contract dated until 2026. The 26-year-old’s previously valid working paper would have expired next year.
“With FC Bayern we have won everything there is to be won over the past three years. But it is even nicer than winning titles to confirm and repeat these successes. We want to build on that in the next few years”, says Goretzka.
FCB sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said: “We are very happy that Leon Goretzka has extended his contract ahead of time until 2026. Leon has become a regular at FC Bayern and a face of this team. I am very happy that we will continue to work together for the next five years Leon is a source of energy on and off the pitch. He has great technique and dynamism and is a particularly dangerous midfielder across Europe who can decide games. “
After Joshua Kimmich (26), Goretzka is the second absolute top performer who has extended his contract with Bayern in the past few weeks. Both are considered an integral part of the Bayern team in the coming years and should shape an era as a midfield team. According to Salihamidzic, they are “the heart of the team”. Goretzka made a free transfer from FC Schalke 04 to Munich in 2018 and has since won the German championship three times and the Champions League once.

In the Goretzka case, there had been various reports on the course of the negotiations over the past few months. In the meantime, it was said that Goretzka was demanding a monster salary of 20 million euros, which is why an extension was unlikely. According to information from Goal and SPOX but never given.
In the past few weeks, the parties have converged, and Kimmich also expressed the hope that with his extension he could persuade other players – including his friend Goretzka – to imitate. With Goretzka’s extension, the horror scenario of a free transfer, which could not be prevented with David Alaba, was shelved.
This means that there are currently only two players in the squad in Niklas Süle and Corentin Tolisso who are part of the (extended) permanent staff and whose contracts will expire next summer. Another year later, in the summer of 2023, according to the current status, the contracts of captain Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, among others, will end.
