Sergi Roberto was one of the Barca fans’ scapegoats for the smack against Bayern. The homegrown had a lot to struggle with.
The 3-0 home defeat against FC Bayern and the whistles from their own fans apparently hit Sergi Roberto heavily on Tuesday evening. As the AS reported, the defensive player cried in the dressing room after the final whistle.
Roberto had previously had a difficult time on the lawn against his opponents Leroy Sane and Alphonso Davies. Boos and whistles accompanied his actions and when the 29-year-old was replaced by coach Ronald Koeman after just under an hour, there was sometimes malicious applause from the stands.
FC Barcelona: Gerard Pique protects Sergi Roberto
According to AS the dissolved Roberto then had to be comforted in the cabin by his co-captains Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets. Commenting on the fans’ reaction, Pique said: “It hurts me personally. I know him, he’s a great person and he loves this club more than anyone else.”
Pique went on to protect his team-mate: “I want to remind people that he’s not a trained full-back. He’s a central player, a midfielder. He sacrificed himself and took this position. He has done excellently many times before. “
People are very much welcome to voice their opinions, but it “hurts a lot,” Pique said.
Sergi Roberto, who has played for Barca since 2006 and has been a member of the professional squad since 2013, found himself on the right side of the Barca defense chain because of Sergino Dest’s injury.
