Rapid lost the derby “brutally sobering”

After seven draws in a row, there was another winner in the Vienna derby yesterday: Austria overtook Rapid in the table with a 2-1 win in the 337th edition and climbed to fifth place.

“Winning a derby – there’s nothing nicer. We played outstandingly in the first half,” said Dominik Fitz, who made it 2-0 with a penalty after Muharem Huskovic’s opening goal (4th).

“You can’t start worse,” said Rapid coach Ferdinand Feldhofer. Rapid fought their way into the game only after the break, and the goal from substitute Ante Bajic only came in injury time, thanks to Austria’s goalkeeper Christian Früchtl. “It’s brutally sobering. It was not enough in all respects,” said Rapid captain Maximilian Hofmann. For Rapid, the derby curse continued in the Allianz Stadium: there was no victory in the tenth duel in the arena either, with six draws it was the fourth defeat.

Before tomorrow’s Champions League game at Dinamo Zagreb, Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle rested almost all the regulars in the 3-2 win in Altach. Sturm Graz is two points behind the leaders of the table and also struggled in the 2-1 win against Tirol.
