Jiri Pavlenka reveals that he not only had back problems but also other health concerns last summer.
SV Werder Bremen got off to an extremely strong start to the season, with Jiri Pavlenka playing a major part in his consistently good performances. A year ago his situation was completely different…
After relegation to the second division, Jiri Pavlenka was considered a candidate for sale at SV Werder. However, a stubborn back injury thwarted a change – the goalkeeper’s participation in the European Championship was also shattered as a result.
“The coach said I had a good chance of playing at the European Championships. Then the day before our friendly against Italy I got back problems,” Pavlas said in an interview with the picture. “I got injections to be able to play. After the game it got worse and I had to leave. Now I’m happy to be able to play in goal again.”
The Czech revealed that at that stage he “didn’t know if I could keep playing football” – the end of his career was apparently an issue. It wasn’t just the back that was worrying, as Pavlenka reveals: “I had big problems – not just because of my back. I could hardly walk. The doctors didn’t know what it was for days. It wasn’t just the back, it was something other.”
Back problems are not the sole cause
The failure at that time was not only due to the back problems, but “also because of another medical cause,” said the goalkeeper, who had never spoken about it before. What it was all about, “I don’t want to go into detail about that,” Pavlenka asked for understanding. “It was a very difficult year for me. But now everything is okay and I can train without pain.”
The 30-year-old, who had extended his contract at Osterdeich until 2025 after the climb, emphasized that it was good for him “that I feel the trust, which also helps me to be braver in some situations”.
Despite the successful start to the season, he doesn’t want to spit too big: “Especially after the last two Bundesliga seasons, it’s better if we remain humble.”
