They are following in the footsteps of Michael Reisenberger (women) and Martin Weiß (men), who both retired after the disappointing World Games in the summer. Now it’s time to get new momentum. “In 2023 there will be a men’s World Cup in Mannheim and a women’s European Championship in Austria. We want to have a say in the title again,” says Association President Gerhard Zeller.
Azesberger, who played 55 times for Austria during her playing days, will have to build a new team. “After the resignation of six experienced players, we accepted some young talents into the squad,” said the Mühlviertler, who already gained coaching experience in Arnreit and in Austria’s future squad.
The transition is similarly smooth for the men, as Simon was already working as an assistant coach under his predecessor Weiß. The greatest success as a player was the world championship title in 2007. Simon has already scheduled three training courses for the coming year. “Because of the high pressure from the Bundesliga and the European Cup, our focus is on regeneration,” says Simon, who wants to get a more precise picture of his squad in sporting motor tests at the weekend. Roland Helmberger and Dietmar Weiß will be at his side as assistant coaches.
