The glaciers are in form crisis

Last Sunday, during the snow check, the finish area at around 2800 meters above sea level presented itself as a scree slope. This week, too, it was impossible to snow the last part of the downhill run due to the mild temperatures. The last deadline for a commitment has been postponed to next Saturday by the International Ski Federation FIS. “There is no plan B, shortening the route is not an option,” says FIS Race Director Trinkl. The World Cup premiere with the transnational downhill is planned for the coming week on the Matterhorn. The start would have been in Switzerland, the destination is in Italy. The races are scheduled for October 29th and 30th, the first practice session would be on October 26th. Two women’s downhill runs are to follow on the first weekend in November. Can a bad weather front announced for Friday save the races? Probably not, a cold snap should be a long time coming.

Not only on the Matterhorn, but also in Sölden, there is no sign of the onset of winter. At the Rettenbachferner, the temperatures were recently in the plus range, but a World Cup slope in giant slalom format could still be groomed. Mild temperatures and sunshine are forecast for the weekend.
