DFB Cup: FC Bayern celebrates in Augsburg – Werder fails at second division Paderborn

Plenty of penalties, frequent extra time and a failed Bundesliga team: Werder Bremen lost in the DFB Cup after a penalty shoot-out to second division team Paderborn. St. Pauli had Freiburg on the brink of defeat for a long time – and Augsburg tickled FC Bayern.

Werder Bremen, the next Bundesliga club, stumbled in the DFB Cup, while SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund prevented the second-round elimination – albeit with some effort. Record-breaking cup winners Bayern Munich were tickled again by FC Augsburg, but unlike in the Bundesliga, Bayern were able to hit back this time.

In the end it was 5:2 in a thrilling round of 16 encounter. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (27th minute, 59th), Joshua Kimmich (53rd), Jamal Musiala (74th) and Alphonso Davies (90th + 1) scored for Bayern, who initially ran behind a deficit and also with one Jubilee jersey on the occasion of 50 years of the Olympic Stadium caused a stir. Mads Pedersen (9th) and Dayot Upamecano (65th / own goal) scored the Augsburg goals.

Werder: First 2: 2 after 0: 2, then unhappy

Bremen missed the leap into the round of 16 on Wednesday with a 4:5 (2:2, 2:2, 0:2) penalty shootout at second division top team SC Paderborn. Felix Platte (22nd minute) and Sirlord Conteh (43rd) gave the enthusiastic home team a deserved lead, while Leonardo Bittencourt (65th) and Mitchell Weiser (84th) still saved Werder with their goals into extra time. After another goalless 30 minutes, the penalty shoot-out had to decide, in which Bittencourt was the only Bremen player to miss. SCP goalkeeper Leopold Zingerle parried his attempt.

There were heated discussions about an alleged 3:2 for Bremen by Niklas Füllkrug, who was denied recognition for a foul on the advice of the fourth official.

BVB victory in Hanover flattering

Dortmund is in the round of 16 after a flattering 2-0 (1-0) at second division side Hannover 96. An own goal by Bright Arrey-Mbi (11th minute) put BVB on course in front of 49,000 spectators. Jude Bellingham (71st) converted a penalty kick caused to him. Substitute Karim Adeyemi (85th) saw the red card for an emergency brake.

Freiburg just barely missed an embarrassment. The South Baden team won the home game against second division FC St. Pauli 2-1 (1-1, 0-1) after extra time. Lukas Daschner (42nd minute) put the guests in the lead, Matthias Ginter (90th + 3) and Michael Gregoritsch (119th) turned the game around.

Bundesliga table leaders 1. FC Union Berlin confidently prevailed 2-0 (1-0) against second division 1. FC Heidenheim. VfB Stuttgart even celebrated a shooting match against second division bottom Arminia Bielefeld 6-0 (4-0).

Second division club Karlsruher SC lost 7:8 (2:2, 2:2, 0:2) on penalties at league rivals SV Sandhausen. Stephan Ambrosius (8th/own goal) and Aleksandr Zhirov (44th) scored the goals for the hosts, Marvin Wanitzek (58th/hand penalty) and Tim Breithaupt (72nd) equalized for KSC. After goalless extra time, SVS goalkeeper Nikolai Rehnen parried Marcel Franke’s attempt on penalties.
