Mbappé’s contract far exceeds the last one signed by Lionel Messi with Barcelona in 2017, and which was revealed in exclusive information published by ‘El Mundo’ in August 2021. The winner of seven Ballon d’Ors signed a 555 million contract euros for four seasons. At that time, Messi was earning what no athlete in the world had ever earned before: 138 million euros a year between fixed, variable and renewal premium.

Messi is also far from reaching Mbappé’s current contract. The Argentine striker earns 41 million euros net per season in the French team.
This amount includes a percentage of payment in cryptocurrencies, in addition to a loyalty bonus. However, Messi did not charge any premium for signing him, something that did happen with Mbappé, who earned 180 million last European summer.
If Messi already manages figures that are far removed from Mbappé, Neymar’s is even further away. The Brazilian attacker signed in his last renewal with PSG a salary of 36 million net for each of the five seasons for which he renewed his contract.
Mbappé’s is the best contract signed in the history of sports, to the point that it also exceeds all the figures reached in boxing, the NBA, American football or Major League Baseball.
After Mbappé and Messi, the third largest contract in the history of the sport corresponds to American football player Patrick Mahomes, who in 2010 signed a 10-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs for which he received 510 million euros.
Reaction
The money that Mbappé will receive also exceeds any contract signed before by Floyd Mayweather, the highest paid boxer in history.
The American, nicknamed ‘Money’ -for the great fortune he pocketed when he was active- signed a 456 million euro contract in 2013 for six fights in 30 months.
However, PSG reacted strongly on the eve of an important match against Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League, in which the Parisian club hopes to seal their qualification for the round of 16.
“After the sensational article published (…) about the club and one of its players, Paris Saint-Germain refutes the story and the details,” the French club reported in a statement.
“The timing of the publication raises questions just hours before an important Champions League match. Paris Saint-Germain will not stoop to making further comments. Everyone in the club is concentrating positively on the next Champions League match.”
