The Hessians feel let down by the referees once again. This underpins the so-called “true table”, in which controversial decisions are taken into account and corrected by a panel of experts nominated by the football portal “Transfermarkt”.
If everything had gone smoothly, Eintracht would not be in fifth place. The “Falcons” would be one point ahead of reigning champions FC Bayern, who defeated Mainz 6-2.
“I saw the pictures. It was a clear penalty and a red card,” said coach Glasner, looking at the key scene in the 43rd minute. Ex-Salzburger Karim Adeyemi in the Dortmund jersey had bumped Frankfurt offensive man Jesper Lindström roughly to the ground and thus deprived the Danes of a hundred percent chance of scoring. That was when the score was 1:1.
“The referees are the poorest”
Glasner then asked the question about the meaning of the video assistant referee (VAR). “I think the referees are then the poorest. He waits for the sign from VAR – and that doesn’t come. It’s a shame, it’s not the first time. If he doesn’t have the TV picture, then you don’t need the VAR anymore,” judged the 48-year-old from Riedau. “We discuss the VAR all the time. I wonder what we have this thing for if we don’t use it,” added sporting director Markus Krösche angrily.
Referee Sascha Stegemann had the size, at least after the final whistle, to face interviews and admit his mistake. “When I now see the pictures with the corresponding camera perspectives, one has to state clearly that there should have been a penalty for Eintracht Frankfurt,” said the 37-year-old.
The battered traditional club and reigning Europa League winner has no time to bury his head in the sand. The group finals in the Champions League are already waiting in Lisbon on Tuesday (9 p.m., DAZN and Sky). Eintracht must win at Sporting CP to make it into the top two and thus into the round of 16. Frankfurt lost the first duel at home 0:3. “We’ll fight back, we always play to win,” emphasized Glasner: “Of course we’re disappointed with our defeat, but the performance was great. I have complete confidence in the team that they can do it.” (Alex)
