DFB team: After Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gündogan is apparently also thinking about resigning

Ilkay Gündogan has had a mediocre European Championship behind him. Maybe his last appearance in the DFB dress is already behind him.

Toni Kroos has already announced his resignation from the German national team. In addition to him, another midfield star could end his national team career.

According to Bild am Sonntag, Ilkay Gündogan is also considering resigning from the DFB team in order to focus fully on Manchester City. Gündogan will be 31 years old in October.

The Gelsenkirchen native wants to make his decision in a few weeks after his vacation. A conversation with the new national coach, Hansi Flick, should be crucial.

The former Bayern coach could rely on his proven quintuple trio in midfield with Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Müller. Gündogan’s role in the DFB dress is therefore questionable even after a weak EM.

Ilkay Gündogan with the best season of his career

At Manchester City in a more offensive role behind the storm row, Gündogan completed the best season of his career. In 46 competitive games for the Skyblues, Gündogan was directly involved in 22 goals, he scored 17 goals himself.

At the European Championship, he was only in the three group games in the starting line-up of Joachim Loew. He was substituted for Hungary after an hour. In the round of 16 against England he lost his starting place to Goretzka, who had gone into the tournament. However, he had bruised his skull against Hungary.
