England full-back Ben Chilwell is doubtful for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar after suffering a hamstring injury in Chelsea’s Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb.

Chilwell was expected to compete with Luke Shaw for a place in the Three Lions’ starting XI – but now the Chelsea star is at risk of losing his World Cup appearances.

The left-back was injured in the closing stages of Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Zagreb and was distraught when he realized his World Cup hopes were hanging in the balance.

“Not good,” said Chelsea coach Graham Potter after the game when asked about the state of affairs. “When he’s squirming like that, that’s worrying. We’ll have to examine him, but it doesn’t look good at the moment.”

“I don’t want to say more, but when a player bends like Ben does, it’s never a good sign.”

With the World Cup less than three weeks away, England manager Gareth Southgate will likely have to consider possible alternatives to Chilwell at left-back for his side in Qatar.

Kyle Walker-Peters and Ryan Sessegnon could both be considered, with the former having already made two appearances for the Three Lions in 2022 – his first two for his country.
