Now that the UEFA Nations League has been established in men’s football for several years, the competition is also being introduced in women’s football. It will already start in 2023.

The sense and nonsense of the Nations League has already been discussed at length. The fact that another competition would make the already packed schedule even tighter was viewed critically in many quarters – but now you have to acknowledge that the Nations League is at least more interesting than any irrelevant friendlies.

After the successful introduction in men’s football, the new format will also be used in women’s football in the future. UEFA announced that the Nations League will also take place in women’s football for the first time in autumn 2023 – the tournament determines, for example, the participants for the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Nations League is divided into three different ones: A, B and C.

Leagues A and B each consist of 16 nations divided into four groups of four. League C consists of 19 teams that compete in four groups of four and one group of three. As in the Champions League group stage, for example, the nations play home and away matches within their group.

Group winners in League A play finals

The top four groups in League A advance to the finals of the Nations League, where the winners are played in knockout matches, semi-finals, third-place play-off and final.

Extra bonus: The two finalists automatically qualify to take part in the 2024 Olympic Games. France, as host of the Olympics, has already qualified – should Les Bleues also reach the final of the Nations League, the winner of the match for third place would also go to the Olympics take part.

The bottom teams in leagues A and B are relegated to leagues B and C at the end of the Nations League season. The group winners in leagues B and C are promoted to leagues A and B respectively. So far nothing unknown. Since there is one more group in league C, even the worst third-placed team from league B has to accept relegation to league C.

In addition, there are also other playoff games, because the remaining teams also take part in promotion and relegation games. This gives the nations the chance to get a better starting position for the qualification (for the European Championship or the World Cup) that follows the Nations League.
