Bundesliga: dream goals as a World Cup application: Dortmund celebrates Moukoko

Remarkably young, amazingly ripped off. The only 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko is becoming more and more of a solid support for BVB. That arouses the interest of national coach Hansi Flick.

Youssoufa Moukoko managed the interview marathon after his two dream goals with a permanent smile. Just as carefree as before on the pitch, the Dortmund attacker mastered his task in the limelight, which was unusual for a 17-year-old soccer professional.

“It feels very good. A derby win always tastes best,” he commented on his first Bundesliga brace to make it 3-0 (3-0) over VfL Bochum.

“I should just carry on like this”

The gala not only provided arguments for a regular place in the club, but also for a place in the squad of the German national team at the World Cup tournament in Qatar. Moukoko candidly confirmed a phone call with national coach Hansi Flick a few days ago: “I should just keep going. They’re watching everything. And in the end, those who perform will also be there.”

With a brilliant long-range shot in the eighth minute of the game from 18 meters under the crossbar of the Bochum goal, Moukoko sent the audience into ecstasy for the first time. With his second goal, when he lobbed the ball from 35 meters over VfL keeper Manuel Riemann into the net, many fans were even reminded of Lars Ricken’s goal of the century in Dortmund in the 1997 Champions League final against Juventus Turin. “I got a tip from Edin that Riemann is always far in front of his goal,” revealed the match winner, who was celebrated with ovations from the audience when he was substituted in the 82nd minute.

Record: youngest league goalscorer

The young professional’s remarkable development also got his coach Edin Terzic in raptures: “He’s extremely talented and wants to improve every day. He’s made a huge step, can always be played and uses his body much better,” praised the footballer Teacher. But he warned of hype: “The way we protected him when he shot the balls next to the goal, it will continue now. He is and will remain 17.”

Moukoko has now scored eleven Bundesliga goals across the seasons – no professional was younger at this brand. He is increasingly closing the gap left by newcomer Sébastien Haller, who is suffering from cancer, in BVB’s attack. Moukoko has meanwhile won the internal duel with the summer acquisition Anthony Modeste.

Nevertheless, talks about extending the contract, which expires at the end of the season, have been stalled for months. The good relationship with coach Terzic could help the young star remain loyal to BVB. “I have Edin’s confidence, I know the environment and I feel very comfortable here,” said Moukoko.

Third Bundesliga win in a row

A World Cup nomination could further improve his negotiating position. When asked if he thinks he has a chance of being in the 26-man squad, Moukoko replied: “I can only do my best and not influence it. In the end, the national coach decides. On Thursday we’ll see who’s in it.”

Goals from Moukoko and Giovanni Reyna (12th penalty kick) helped BVB to their third Bundesliga win in a row. This means that the Revierclub remains within striking distance of title favorites FC Bayern, three points behind. But what the win over Bochum is really worth will only become clear in the games in Wolfsburg and Mönchengladbach. “Now there are still two important tasks waiting for us – we have created a good basis for them today,” said Terzic.

In both trend-setting games, Marco Reus should also get more game shares. After a forced break of weeks and a short 23-minute mission against Bochum, the BVB captain is eager to recommend himself to national coach Flick for a World Cup spot despite the long downtime. In the short term, it should be decided “how much is enough on Tuesday,” said Terzic with a view to the game in Wolfsburg. “I am sure that we can increase the intensity and the duration of the load with each passing day. It is important that he can still collect minutes.”
