Mitchel Weiser: star of the day for the Brazilian from the Weser

With South American ease, Bremen’s Mitchell Weiser took apart Schalke’s defense on matchday 13 and set up two goals. The newcomer is already turning out to be a transfer coup on the Weser. That’s what it’s for star of match day.

In business there are hidden champions. Often medium-sized companies that have managed to achieve a global reputation in their industry – little or not at all noticed by the public.

There is something similar in the Bundesliga. Players who work diligently and solidly week after week, but who are often denied the big limelight.

Mitchell Weise is a difference player for Werder Bremen

One of them has now managed to draw attention to him, of all things in the Werder Bremen jersey, which had the prototype of the hidden champion in its ranks in Dieter Eilts in the 1990s.

Mitchell Weiser has been in excellent form for weeks and is a real transfer coup for Bremen. Only sorted out at Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, the 28-year-old finally ended up on the Weser, where he was already on loan in 2021/22 – and where he celebrated promotion to the first division.

The fact that Bremen may soon be celebrating something completely different is also due to the right-back. Defensively clarified and offensively ripped off, a real difference player. Ten goals in 15 competitive games speak for themselves, praises the football portal “90min.com”.

As if to prove it, he scored both goals in his team’s 2-1 win against Schalke 04 on Saturday evening – and how.

Two assists in the win against Schalke 04

When Niclas Füllkrug made it 1-0, about whom everyone is currently talking in Bremen and in the Bundesliga, the defender storms forward, leaves Schalke’s Tobias Mohr on the left and runs towards goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow alone. But instead of taking shots from five yards out, he stunned the Royal Blues’ defense with a back-heel. The ball lands in front of the feet of Füllkrug, who nets humorlessly. That’s what you call blind understanding. “I always call him Ronaldinho,” admitted the goalscorer after the game.

The template to make it 2-0 is no less outstanding: After winning the ball on the center line, Weiser crosses the back of the Schalke defense and onto Marvin Ducksch’s foot, who finishes with a lob and causes cheers in the Weser Stadium.

“He fits into a team that plays offensively because he can play to his strengths there,” says coach Ole Werner about his offensive man. “He does that for us very consistently at a very good level over a longer period of time. That’s why we’re very happy that he’s with us.”

The Bremen fans will probably sign that – and Hansi Flick may be annoyed that the name Mitchell Weiser is not on his provisional 55-man list for the World Cup.

As a small consolation for the Bremen man with the shirt number eight and his impressive performance, there is at least: the star of match day.
