Bremen’s room for error is small in Munich

Germany’s national coach Hansi Flick announced his squad for the World Cup in Qatar on Thursday. Today and tomorrow, in the 14th round of the Bundesliga, the pros have their last chance to jump on the finals train. Storm option Niclas Füllkrug can’t do any advertising on his own behalf today: The Werder striker will miss the away game against Bayern Munich (8.30 p.m., Sat 1) due to a back injury.

While the record champions were struggling yesterday because of the draw for the round of 16 in the Champions League (see page 14), Werder coach Ole Werner considered how the league leaders could stumble. “A lot of things have to come together. The only part that is up to us is our performance,” said the 34-year-old. “The room for error is very small.”

In the last 29 duels, Bremen have only scored two points against Bayern. Werder celebrated their last win in September 2008 in Munich (5:2) – at that time Sebastian Prödl defended for Bremen, Martin Harnik was on the bench. Today, Werder captain Marco Friedl wants to slow down the Bayern onslaught, Romano Schmid should create offensive relief.

Munich’s pursuers Dortmund can present themselves in Wolfsburg today (6.30 p.m.). The use of captain Marco Reus is questionable – as well as his participation in the World Cup.
