Homosexuality as “mental damage”: scandalous statements by Qatar’s World Cup ambassador

The statement was made in an interview in the ZDF documentary “Geheimsache Qatar” by Jochen Breyer and Julia Friedrichs, which will be broadcast this Tuesday (8:15 p.m.). The excerpt with Salman’s statements was already shown in the “heute-journal” on Monday evening.

The former international says in a contribution from the documentary material: “Many things will come to the country. Let’s talk about gays. The most important thing is that everyone will accept that you come here. But they will have to accept our rules.”

Then came the verbal gaffes: Salman said he had problems with children seeing gays. Because they would then learn something that is not good. Then came the statement with which he described homosexuals as mentally ill. In his eyes, being gay is “haram”, i.e. a sin. Also to be seen: the spokesman for the World Cup organizing committee, who accompanied the ZDF team during the shooting, stops the interview immediately after these Salman sentences.

Fifa emphasizes: Everyone is welcome

Homosexuality is forbidden in Islamist Qatar and can be punished under current Sharia law with up to seven years in prison and lashes. The tournament organizers and Fifa had recently emphasized several times that all fans were welcome at the World Cup in Qatar.
