James Maddison could miss the World Cup with England due to injury.
James Maddison had to be substituted after just 24 minutes in Leicester’s Premier League game against West Ham on Saturday. That puts his place at the World Cup in jeopardy just three days before England’s departure for Qatar.
Maddison opened the scoring for the Foxes in east London, building on his excellent form which recently earned him his first call-up to an international squad since 2019 when Gareth Southgate named his final 26-man squad for the World Cup.
However, midway through the first half of the game against West Ham, he had to be pulled out with a suspected hamstring injury and Dennis Praet came on as a substitute.
Demands were high for Maddison to join the England squad. Before the squad was finally announced, there were rumors he would miss the call-up but the list confirmed by Southgate, who gave the player his senior debut three years ago, had his name alongside those of Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.
Leicester and England fans will now be nervously awaiting further news on his condition as even a relatively minor injury could be enough to torpedo his World Cup given how close time is before the tournament begins.
