ÖFB team players defended Rangnick against Ronaldo criticism

The Manchester United star had denied Rangnick, the club’s interim coach in the previous season, in a sweeping interview, the competence as a coach. “I don’t know Cristiano Ronaldo personally. I have no idea what got into him there,” said Schlager on Monday at the ÖFB team camp in Marbella.

The Leipzig legionnaire, who grew up in Salzburg under sports director Rangnick in his early years, did not want to comment further on the statements about the German. “Everyone knows how much influence he had in Austria, at RB Leipzig and also in Salzburg,” recalled the 25-year-old. Before United, Rangnick worked as a coach in Leipzig, at Schalke and at TSG Hoffenheim. “He was successful everywhere,” said Schlager. “He is a very great professional who has also changed football a bit.”

“As a footballer you should be able to do everything”

The counter-pressing, which the Red Bull teams also practice, was shaped by Rangnick. Schlager came into contact with it at a young age and is considered one of the parade players for it. Rangnick has also called up the midfielder in all of his previous six ÖFB international matches in the starting lineup – as the only player. “If you do and play something from an early age, it’s probably easier for you,” said Schlager. “In the end you always have to do your best.”

Every game philosophy has its justification, said Leipzig’s winning goal scorer from Saturday’s league game at Werder Bremen (2-1). “It doesn’t mean that something new is bad either. As a footballer, you should be ready to play anything.” Ronaldo apparently found it difficult to meet Rangnick’s requirements – although the five-time world footballer was still a regular at United under him.

Baumgartner also supported his team boss. “He has already proven that he can not only build clubs, as he did with us in Hoffenheim, Leipzig, Salzburg or Red Bull in general. He has also had great success as a coach,” said the offensive man . “That’s where Cristiano Ronaldo’s frustration comes from.”

Baumgartner himself has suffered three league defeats in a row with Hoffenheim, but he scored one goal in each of the two most recent games against Frankfurt (2-4) and Wolfsburg (1-2). There is no sign of the 23-year-old being ready for a holiday – not least because of the lack of additional pressure on the European Cup in the fall. “I feel really good, things have been going well in the last few weeks. I’ve played well,” said the Lower Austrian, who also scored against Croatia (1-3) in the last ÖFB international match in September.

The training week in Andalusia should primarily be used for further development. It is the third course under Rangnick, who took over the team from Franco Foda at the end of May. “It’s about getting the whole plan, the whole project, the coach’s game idea even better into your head and into your legs,” explained Baumgartner. Schlager put it this way: “We want to consolidate our game philosophy.” That of Ralf Rangnick.
