Alarm mood in the ÖSV

“Technically, we’re not at the level we assumed,” said Thomas Trinker on Sunday after the start as a setback.

The aggressiveness he proclaimed in advance froze in the ice-cold north. “We expected a lot more. I would even say it’s unacceptable what happened to us,” Trinker admitted the botched start of the World Cup season on ORF. “It happened, it needs analysis and hopefully more attack in the next race.”

Technical deficits, lack of courage to attack, too many mistakes overall – Trinker diagnosed the ÖSV technicians after the delayed World Cup start with several shortcomings. In addition, new names from other nations are also pushing into the limelight. “The other nations don’t sleep, they do their job,” said Liensberger, referring to the Croatians Leona Popovic and Zrinka Ljutic, who placed sixth and seventh on Sunday directly in front of her.

“The competition is very strong”

“The competition is very strong,” said Trinker, knowing that in addition to established forces, the Swedes and Norwegians also made a strong first impression, at least on familiar snow conditions. “We have to stretch quite a bit to keep up,” said Trinker and fired the first warning shot after the first stop: “The potential is there, the girls have to use it now.”

The search for the reset button was started by some. “It’s smarter, I’ll make a cut and try it again over there,” said Truppe after places 15 and 21. “It looks a lot better in giant slalom, I’m more ready.”

“We’ll stay tuned”

Liensberger didn’t seem surprised by the considerable time gap of 1.8 seconds she had on the winner. “There were turns where I noticed it worked. But also some where the skis didn’t go through properly.” The slalom world champion did not show any great disappointment, at least not publicly. “The whole team didn’t show what we were actually capable of. We are challenged. There is a lot to do.”

After another two days in Levi with giant slalom training, the ÖSV technicians move to the USA. “We’ll stick with it. There will be other races, other slopes, other conditions, so hopefully things will look better then,” explained Trinker.

In a completely different mood, double winner Mikaela Shiffrin started her journey home. “Killington is a special place for me. Expectations are high and the results will certainly not lower them,” said the American, who made it 2-0 in the first showdown with her long-time rival Petra Vlhova and in a week went to the top sixth consecutive slalom win in Killington.
