Before the soccer World Cup, there was a lot of discussion as to whether it should be boycotted because of the criticism of Qatar as the host country. As the ratings show, the Austrian fans couldn’t be stopped from turning on the television: 602,000 people aged twelve and over watched Ecuador’s victory over the hosts on ORF 1 (market share: 30 percent).
For comparison: in 2018, an average of 566,000 people watched the first World Cup match between Russia and Saudi Arabia (market share: 36 percent).
The situation in Germany is different. Here, an average of 6.209 million people watched the game on ZDF. Four years earlier, an average of 10.01 million viewers had watched the start of the World Cup on ARD. The market share was 28.2 percent this year, compared to 52 percent in 2018.
