Max Kruse almost became German champion for the first time – but not in football. The professional from VfL Wolfsburg only had to admit defeat in the final of the German Poker Championship in the heads-up and narrowly missed his second tournament win in a short period of time in poker.

Nevertheless, it is the next success for the 34-year-old at the poker table. “2nd place – unfortunately no title for me, but it was still fun,” wrote Kruse, who received 48,764 euros for second place, in his Instagram story.

The ex-national player, who was sorted out at VfL Wolfsburg, now wants to focus on football again after a few off-field actions. “Now the full attack goes back to football,” Kruse also said via Instagram. “I want to be able to train properly again as soon as possible, I want to be fit again as quickly as possible. Because my career is definitely not over yet.” Kruse has been out for weeks due to a torn muscle fiber. It remains to be seen whether he will be back at the Wolfsburg training session on December 1st.

VfL, where coach Niko Kovac no longer has a use for Kruse, would like to get rid of the striker in winter, despite the contract that runs until summer 2023. However, there are still no concrete interested parties. “Where and how and whatever happens, I have no idea,” Kruse said.
