The world football association FIFA announced this on Wednesday evening a few hours after the match, previously the Disciplinary Committee had discussed it.
The German team had reacted to FIFA’s ban policy. Before kick-off in Ar-Rayyan, the starting eleven lined up for a team photo in front of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, with all the players demonstratively covering their mouths. “With our captain’s armband, we wanted to set an example for values that we live in the national team: diversity and mutual respect,” said the German Football Association (DFB) on Twitter: “To be loud together with other nations. This is not about a political message: human rights are non-negotiable.”
According to the association, this should “be a matter of course. But unfortunately it still isn’t. That is why this message is so important to us. Banning us from the bandage is like banning our mouths. Our stance stands.”
This was preceded by a day-long discussion about the “One Love” armband – FIFA had threatened sanctions to European nations whose captains wanted to wear the colorful armband. The DFB, national coach Hansi Flick and politicians reacted with outrage.
