EM 2021: surreptitious advertising? ARD checks Bastian Schweinsteiger’s watch

Did TV expert Bastian Schweinsteiger use surreptitious advertising during an EM broadcast? The ARD wants to review the matter.

Bastian Schweinsteiger wore an advertising partner’s watch at the European Championship quarter-finals between England and Ukraine (4-0). Now the ARD is checking whether the TV expert has violated the broadcaster’s own guidelines.

The 2014 world champion tweeted two photos at half time with the words “Time for the 2nd half”. The first picture showed Schweinsteiger in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the other showed a close-up of his arm. His watch (model MARQ Athlete Performance, cost around 1700 euros) was clearly visible on the left wrist.

In addition, the 38-year-old watch manufacturer Garmin, for which he has been a testimonial since 2019, linked. The suspicion quickly arose on social media that Schweinsteiger was doing surreptitious advertising.

Surreptitious advertising by Schweinsteiger? ARD announces review

The public broadcaster took a position on Monday on a corresponding demand from Bild newspaper. “Like all of our programs, the ARD broadcasts of EURO 2020 are subject to the ARD advertising guidelines, which exclude any form of surreptitious advertising and unmarked product placement,” explained an ARD spokesman.

The fact that Schweinsteiger “wore a watch during the broadcast of the match between Ukraine and England and published a post on social media at half-time without our knowledge as part of a paid advertising partnership will be examined and assessed,” added the spokesman.

The former Bayern Munich player wanted to respond to the request of the Bild newspaper did not comment on the allegations.
