Bond coach Louis van Gaal is also happy about affection. At the press conference ahead of the Netherlands’ game against Ecuador at the World Cup in Qatar, Senegalese journalist Papa Gueye spoke up and explained how great he thought Van Gaal was, even though his team had defeated Senegal. That’s when the sometimes grumpy 71-year-old’s heart opened. “I don’t often get said nice things like that. You get ‘a big smack’ from me,” said the visibly touched Van Gaal.
At the end of the PK, the “Oranje” coach called the journalist and he got his cuddle (hug). “It’s the first time I’ve seen him. He’s a cool guy,” Gueye said after the hug and some photos.
Van Gaal is extremely relaxed these days. On Thursday he even briefly overrode the meticulous FIFA rules. Normally, photographers are only allowed to take pictures for the first five minutes at press conferences. When the time was up, van Gaal asked a photographer if he had enough pictures. The latter replied that he would like two minutes to take photos of full-back Denzel Dumfries, who was also present. No problem for van Gaal: “You get the two minutes because he’s a pretty handsome guy.”
