World Cup 2022: TV expert learns of her mother’s death during the broadcast

During the match between Denmark and Tunisia, TV pundit Nadia Nadim learned that her mother had died in a road accident. The 34-year-old came to Europe from Afghanistan as a child.

Nadia Nadim was to explain and evaluate Denmark’s World Cup preliminary round match against Tunisia on British television station ITV. The 34-year-old herself has played 100 international matches for the Danish women’s team. But when the game went back to the studio after the final whistle – the game ended 0-0 – some viewers were surprised. Nadim was nowhere to be seen. The moderator only explained that she had to leave the studio urgently.

The footballer later provided clarification on her Instagram account – and revealed a tragic fate. During the live broadcast, she had learned of the death of her mother, who was run over by a truck on her way home from the gym. “Words can’t describe what I’m feeling,” she wrote alongside a black rectangle. “I lost the most important person in my life. It happened so suddenly and unexpectedly.”

Nadia Nadim: “I lost my home”

The striker remembered her late mother in touching words: “Everything I am, I am because of her. I’ve lost my home and I know that nothing will ever feel the same again. Life is unfair and I don’t understand why you and why this way.” Her mother, who lived to be 57, was “a warrior” who “fought for every inch of her life.”

Nadim was born and raised in Afghanistan. At the age of twelve she lost her father, who was killed by the Taliban. The remaining family fled to Denmark. There her mother raised her and her siblings alone. “She gave me life not just once, but twice,” Nadim acknowledged her mother after her tragic accidental death. She was probably alluding to the family’s flight to Europe.

Nadia Nadim started playing football in Denmark, followed by an international career. Among other things, she stood at the top clubs Manchester City and Paris-St. Germain under contract. Since last year she has been playing in the US NWSL league with Racing Louisville FC. She also has a doctorate in medicine.
